Replacement for ASC as Pulling Boat

The announcement in the Annual Review of the project to replace the ASC as the Sea Cadets Pulling Boat is arousing much interest, and has raised questions about the likely timeframe of the project.
As many will know, the prototype boat has been delivered and is undergoing trials at the Southern Area Boat Station and Royal Victoria Docks Boat Station.
As the design of the boat is brand new, the future timeframe of the project is uncertain. Trials and modifications to the prototype will continue until we are sure the design of the boat is right, after which GRP Tooling Splashes will be taken from the prototype. From these will be made the cast aluminium mould from which the production boats will be produced. An early production boat will have to be measured and the results used to gain for the class a certificate of conformity with the EU Recreational Craft Directive (a CE plate), a legal requirement before any new boat can be brought into use in the EU. Each step in this process depends on the step before, and each step also depends on securing the necessary funding. The MSSC is conducting an active fundraising campaign to finance the development process. At this stage, it is likely that all being well, production boats should start being ready for delivery to Units and Boat Stations by late summer 2009, although unforeseen technical, production or fundraising difficulties could delay this.
It is at present anticipated that the cost to Units and Boat Stations of each boat complete with oars and launching trolley will be about £2,000. Units interested in ordering boats funded from their own resources are advised to register their interest with the Onshore Commander (pbalfour@ms-sc.org), stating whether they have the funds in place. Production boats may, initially at least, only be ordered through the MSSC.
